First of all it was made for high-end touchscreen and after that it was designed for feature phones. But now only one site (m.facebook.com) is designed for all mobile users that will work according to your mobile phones.

Previously, some mobile browsers are not capable to show the Full facebook site. The new facebook mobile site gives more convenience to access facebook from your phone. Before today, only feature phone could access m.faceook.com, while some Smartphone users probably use native applications to access facebook. But now, every device uses the same framework that means everyone can get the benefits of facebook features, whether writing messages or checking into Places. Site m.facebook.com Gets Privacy Controls

More than 150 million people are actively use Facebook on mobile devices, often posting status updates and photos. If a user wants to set their status to only be available to friends before making a particularly sensitive post, they’ll soon be able to do this from m.facebook.com. The blog makes no mention of when Facebook’s mobile apps, like Facebook for iPhone, will gain privacy controls.

The mobile site is only part of Facebook’s multi-pronged mobile strategy, which also includes mobile apps and 0.facebook.com, but the addition shows that the company is committed to letting users control their data across platforms. The feature is being rolled out slowly, so it is currently unclear if users will be able to set distribution on a post-by-post basis or only as an overarching setting.

Users will soon be able to access the new mobile privacy controls at m.facebook.com/privacy, or by navigating to Settings->Privacy Settings. There they’ll be able to select who can see the content they share by selecting one of the buckets (Friends Only, Friends of Friends, Everyone, Recommended or Custom) that came along with the new privacy interface released in late May. Recommended is the first option, however, this in fact means sharing posts with everyone, which we noted could be risky since users often post content which could be dangerous or damaging to their credibility if seen by the wrong people.

Users will also have granular privacy control of who sees any of the actions one can take on Facebook. Block lists, public search settings, and basic directory information privacy will also be editable from m.facebook.com.

Mobile Site m.facebook.com’s New Home Page Emphasizes Notifications

The relatively low-bandwidth interface is part of Facebook’s multi-pronged mobile strategy designed to ensure users have access to the service regardless of their handset or the strength of their data connection. M.facebook.com fits between more data intensive mobile applications like Facebook for iPhone and mobile site touch.facebook.com, and the minimal-bandwidth interface 0.facebook.com.

When users visit m.facebook.com they’ll see a trimmed down version of the status publisher above the new notifications, birthdays and requests panel. From here users can respond to friend requests, see that day’s birthdays, and click through links to view all of their latest notifications or their pending event invitations and other requests. This change refocuses the mobile interface on viewing and responding to the actions of others over creating new content.

Below notifications users will see Top News or Most Recent views of their news feed. Options to view only status updates or photos have been relocated behind the See More Stories button at the bottom of the Most Recent feed. There users will also find options to view feeds of only Link, Note, or Event stories — options not available on Facebook.com. Comment and like buttons are now in-line with news feed story timestamps, giving a more streamlined look with less empty white space. At the bottom of the feed is a People You May Know panel similar to the one seen in the right sidebar of the web version of Facebook.com’s home page.

At the bottom of the home page, the Bookmarks panel has been split with Notifications, My Pages, Events, and Photos remaining above the fold; and Links, Notes, Groups, and SMS hidden behind a More button.

This redesign is primarily aesthetic, and doesn’t give m.facebook.com users Places functionality like touch.facebook.com and Facebook for iPhone have. Though some traffic comes from m.facebook.com being used to direct people to download their handset specific Facebook app, m.facebook.com had almost 10 million daily active users and almost 50 million monthly active users by mid August. Keeping this user base engaged through redesigns is important as Facebook waits for them to have access to more full-featured apps and interfaces which increase overall usage.

'The only problem with facebook is that the login textboxes in the mobile version don't work on kindle, so you can't enter any text on them :-S
The solution is quite straightforwards... log in to the full version and then (before it hangs up and after the log in process is done) go to the address address bar and change it to m.facebook.com.'

I tried the websites for mobiles http://www.m.facebook.com etc from a desktop PC using Firefox and Opera. I could enter the sites, but didn't stay to look around. I assume the Kindle3 webkit browser will be able to do this too.

Will Kindle3 be able to enter the normal websites listed in the left-handside column above? If so, what will the user-experience be, acceptable or just plain awful (if answerable)?

For me the Kindle3 is for reading, but our teenage children want to use it for facebook too. From what I have seen I think they will be able to, so will go ahead and buy.

It is unfortunate that we do not have an official Facebook app management for Windows Mobile, but there are ways to access Facebook on your mobile device. For those who want something more full-featured mobile version of Facebook (via m.facebook.com) when you go on your mobile browser, but do not want the full to load, you can access the iPhone version of Facebook, which developed such web application.

I prefer a portal for the iPhone because it does not look like all curled up to fit the display column. Instead, it has a tab at the top to jump around different parts of Facebook.

You can visit the portal by typing iphone.facebook.com into your mobile browser. Facebook mobile version can be accessed via m.facebook.com.

Why are so few sites? Well, even if tolerated browsing on a smartphone, is still far from something you would really enjoy doing that. If a big screen PC available, I prefer to use it thank you very much. Browsing on a smartphone is really limited to situations where there are no longer available - such as when killing time on buses or trains, for example.

As a result, I tend to focus this short period of time browsing the site is relatively small. In order of time spent, this is the site along with screenshots of each that I use most: (apologies to international readers to some local sites are totally useless for everyone except those who live in Helsinki)

NY Times on http://mobile.nytimes.com - highlighted earlier, this is my favorite site of mobile-optimized. Stories are interesting and useful, well presented with an appropriate amount of photos. Given the ability of the phone, I really could not ask for much more.

Of course, there is little interference with one ad at the top of the page, but that falls into the category-received.


Helsingin Sanomat in http://m.hs.fi/ Finland best for local news, this new site works pretty well, although the ad along with the title and navigation bar takes too much space on the home page (see screenshot). Still works pretty well and including the occasional picture.

I also liked the URL. If only all the mobile site is fast and comfortable is named. The "m" prefix must be the de facto standard if you ask me;. Mobi is a bad idea but everyone who has their domain should have no problem in making a mobile-version of the prefix "m" (and has a mobile-prefix as an alias as well)

Site up mobile which is optimized version of a very flawed, but still useful for quick status updates and checks. A good mobile interface is very important for things like up - otherwise, the status of someone is always going to be something boring like "at home" or "at work" as you see from time to time .. Australia in http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/wireless is another version of good newspaper mobile mostly done, although the long URLs. Downsides is that there are practically no pictures and can use the category links on every page - but it also shows that making a relatively functioning mobile site does not need aa primary responsibility. This is the kind of sites that one should be able to get out of every CMS half decent with not much trouble at all.


YTV Journey Planner at http://aikataulut.ytv.fi/reittiopas-pda/fi/ is one of the most useful mobile site ever, despite the horrible URLs are a pain to type before bookmarking it. Travel Planner basically tells you what to take public transportation to get from Points A to Point B, along with schedules and route maps.



Google Reader in http://www.google.com/reader/m/view is a nice interface to access your Google Reader bloglist move. Not fancy but it works pretty well, unfortunately, at least on Nokia phones, can not remember your login information for a long time (not days or weeks), so you have to log in sometimes re-which is a little sore.



Rain radar in http://testbed.fmi.fi/

This is an exception in the sense that they're not moving-optimized. However, it is simple enough to be used on telephone and offered services (Doppler radar rain + temperature metropolitan area) is very useful that deserves to be on the list.

There are Lots of Ways to Do a Facebook

Things I liked about I’m on Facebook — Now What???

  • Practical – every chapter ends with action items for you to try out the lessons learned.
  • Economical – if you’re a regular Facebook user or on your way to becoming one, the authors’ advice will save you A LOT of time for example with tips about how to manage your Facebook notifications.
  • Complete – whether you’re considering Facebook for personal use and/or business use, Jason & Jesse have it covered.
  • Readable – the content flows well, making it easy to read, understand and learn.
  • Personal – Chapter 6′s recommended usage by profile – e.g. Mom or Dad, Business Owner, Student, etc. – is a big time-saver to get you moving in the right direction.
  • Useful – especially pertinent for job seekers, the book has terrific insight about how to brand yourself with Facebook.
  • Pragmatic – possibly the longest chapter is about privacy – the biggest concern for anyone using Facebook – and discusses when you want it and when you’ll be willing to give it up. Plus, the useful appendix to assuage your worries by telling you exactly which information a Facebook application does and does not have access to.

On a side note, as far as I know Kirkpatrick’s publisher Simon & Schuster is still planning on suing us for copyright infringement. I never heard back from them after their initial legal volley. I’m not holding that against Kirkpatrick, though – he’s a long time friend.
So I’ve spent a lot of time with this book. And I’ve spent a lot of time covering Facebook over the last five years, since my first post in 2005 when the company told us that 85% of college students at covered schools were logging into the site at least once a week.
About two years ago Kirkpatrick decided to write a book about Facebook. At the time the site was growing extremely quickly but it certainly wasn’t clear that it would become the 800 lb cultural gorilla that it is today. But he walked away from his position as one of the most senior tech writers at Fortune to pursue this book. And the end result is a fascinating read.
Here’s my recommendation: If you are interested in startups, or how marketing and advertising are evolving, or just how Facebook is changing the world, buy this book. It’s very readable and gives great insights into how Facebook grew from a dorm room to a huge company. There’s no other book out there that gives such a complete history of the company and of Mark Zuckerberg.

To find deals, navigate under your homepage photo to or simply visit Facebook.com/deals. Since there are no deals offered for Raleigh, NC, I’m offered the closest city, Atlanta, GA. The following is a screenshot of the landing page experience.
Even though Atlanta was set as my default, I am able to browse other city deal pages through a drop down at the top of the page. Currently the only cities offering Facebook deals are Atlanta, San Francisco, Dallas, Austin, and San Diego.
As the screenshot above shows, this deals page includes a brief description of the deal, the reduced price, and the option to “Like” or “Buy.” Since most people want to know more about the deal before liking or buying, once you click on the deal you are driven to a “Deals” tab within the brand’s current Facebook page.
Although this screenshot doesn’t capture the entire tab, the tab also includes an area for people to comment about the deal, ask questions around the deal (instead of having to navigate back to the wall), and chat with others about how excited they are that they just purchased it.
Now, lets say I want to buy a deal. If I click “Buy” then I’m led to the following screen where I can select the quantity. As you also can tell, Facebook cleverly checks the option to post to my profile, so as soon as I make the purchase my friends can also see my activity.

And like a reality TV show, Facebook is enclosed, controlled, and manipulated. In the end, it's all weak and without substance.
I think it's brilliant that the boys at Facebook are taking on Netflix by developing their own streaming service. It's yet another hinge on the door used to lock people into the self-contained world of Facebook, where the skittish can comfortably dwell. I'm wondering exactly when Facebook will buy out Second Life and reveal its true intent.
I've said it before in this column, and I'd like to remind people what I think of Facebook: It is the second coming of AOL. It's what AOL should have morphed into if it hadn't failed. It's a community evolved from the ideas of MySpace and LiveJournal and a number of AOL ideas and all rolled into one cogent vision. Mark Zuckerberg's vision for Facebook was made in the image of his own introverted self—with a little Second Life thrown in.
I know many people who rely on Facebook to create an amorphous, plasmodial, shape-shifting version of themselves with an online personality (within the confines of Facebook).
"Friend me, like me, look at me." Oh no! Someone dropped me as a friend. Now I have to hound him to find out why.
Facebook is a world unto itself and has created what has to be refered to a second class citizenry online. It's laughable. When the Net was blooming in the mid-1990s, suddenly, all the isolated online services were forced to link into the Internet. This allowed people to explore outside the domain of a CompuServe or AOL.

Typically, Facebook users can customize which emails or text notifications they receive, whether it's for friend requests or new Facebook events. But on Tuesday, users began complaining that their selected email notifications had been reversed. For instance, those who had opted not to receive emails for events, were suddenly receiving emails about them, while those who'd checkmarked that box were not receiving emails at all.
This prompted Facebook to post the problem on its "Known Issues on Facebook" page on Tuesday night: "Some people are suddenly receiving email notifications for settings they had turned off, and the checkboxes are now checked. We are currently working on a solution to this problem.
By Wednesday afternoon, Facebook apologized and declared the problem resolved.
"Yesterday evening, we discovered a bug that caused a small number of people to start receiving notifications they had previously turned off. We have since resolved the issue and apologize for any inconvenience," a spokesperson said.
Last Friday some Facebook users also reported seeing an error message when trying to access their "Notifications" menu, which Facebook said it resolved within 24 hours.
On Monday, U.K.-based security company Sophos published an open letter to Facebook on its blog, Naked Security, urging Facebook to improve its opt-in privacy schemes, vet app developers (where many phishing scams originate), and turn on a secure connection (HTTPS) standard.

Also somewhat surprising was that Twitter apparently captures 45% of third-party logins within media sites. What’s becoming increasingly clear is that despite Facebook’s dominance, providing a variety of third-party login services is important to capture all new visitors to a site.
While Facebook has continued to encourage publishers to use their login service, the deprecation of the “Connect” brand has generated at a critical time for the company’s growth. Additionally, Facebook is coming under attack from Twitter and more importantly, Google. Whether or not publishers have figured out which service is best to implement, most sites that have implemented Facebook as a tool for logging in have reported an increased level in engagement.
The report also states that Facebook has captured 52% of entertainment sites. The bottom line is that Facebook has a dominant position when it comes to the digital identity race, however the race is nowhere near being over.

Facebook Login is Hard

Rather than having an additional page in between the user’s profile and the application, Facebook is making a simple AJAX pop-up window as pictured below. While I haven’t been able to duplicate this on my own account, it definitely seems like a rational step.

This step shows that Facebook is dedicated to streamlining the application installation process. The more barriers that Facebook can remove for application developers, the happier developers will be. This is definitely a great step! It will be interesting to see how streamlined the process can get. Thanks to Rory Marinich for the tip.

This new homepage design and the redesign of their login page may signal the final transfer of users over to the new design. While we can’t confirm that all users have been transferred, there are many signs pointing to this being the final touch.

HTC Facebook phone

HTC will release a phone with a Facebook user interface next month, according to Cityam.com, a London based news website. HTC’s m.facebook.com phone, it is said, will run a tweaked version of Google Android OS.

HTC’s Facebook phone, and if Facebook is targeting a larger plan of deployment in smartphones, then even its software for mobiles, will likely be unveiled at MWC 2011 a few days from now. Speculation on the Web has it that HTC’s m.facebook.com phone is similar to Google’s Nexus series, i.e., Facebook has chosen HTC to create a prototype Facebook phone; similar to how Google had chosen HTC to make the first Android prototype, Nexus One.

Of course, that both companies chose HTC (assuming that m.facebook.com has indeed done so,) is probably just by chance. However, Cityam.com says HTC will release two Facebook phones at MWC 2011 (is there even a need for two prototypes?). Also, Facebook recently announced having bought mobile ad platform Revel8tion to serve ads to its existing 200 million mobile app users.

Henry Blodgett says he heard that Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin sold $500 million in Facebook stock.

He didn’t name his source and said point blank that Business Insider hasn’t been able to confirm the rumor.

Good luck with getting that confirmed, Henry. We know that Facebook has a policy of not commenting on matters of speculation, and we said as much in our request for a comment from the company. If we hear anything other than a variation on “no comment,” we’ll be sure to update you all.

We completely understand why Facebook spokespeople don’t want to comment about matters of speculation. For instance, back on March 3, rumors circulated that one of the co-founders of m.facebook.com was trying to unload 10 million shares. That same Friday, another rumor had it that General Atlantic may have bought 2.5 million shares. The following Monday, SharesPost announced it closed an auction of m.facebook.com holdings at the second-highest price ever fetched for the shares.

Many people assumed that the rumors preceding the SharesPost announcement might have transpired during the auction. So maybe it’s not too big of a leap to wonder whether we might learn that Saverin’s sale might have occurred on SecondMarket, for instance.

This is a busy time for the social networking business called Facebook.com. It's a site where you can post information about yourself and read about other people, but not everybody is able to see everything - a specific group, like students from a particular school - have to join up.

Nearly 10 million members post photos and personal details to share with their friends - real or virtual. The Wall Street Journal reported Facebook is in quote "serious talks with Yahoo!," which wants to buy the site for close to one billion dollars. And this is the potential billion-dollar CEO.

INSKEEP: His name is Mark Zuckerberg and he launched Facebook with only his fellow Harvard students being invited. Later, other colleges got involved and other high schools, as well as businesses.

Rumor has it that one of Facebook’s co-founders wants to sell up to ten million shares of the company’s stock.

We crave substantiation of this rumor, and have asked Facebook for confirmation, knowing full well that the company has a policy of not commenting on matters of speculation. So let’s talk about this whole thing hypothetically, rather than presume it to be true.

Garrett Sloane of the New York Post cites a “source close to the situation” as saying “at least one dealmaker has been approached by reps of the co-founder to unload up to 10 million shares of common stock in Facebook.”

Facebook has four co-founders, and only one of them still works for the company, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg. We suspect he’s not the one trying to sell up to 10 million shares, assuming the rumor proves true, of course. A CEO’s best interests lie in propping up the value of the stock, not starting a sell-off in the private market.

The other three co-founders have gone off on their own, and thus seem much more likely to sell stakes, simply to lock in profits. Dustin Moskovitz launched Asana; Chris Hughes started Jumo, and Eduardo Saverin has led the investing in the startup Qwiki. The three each have lower single-digit percentage stakes in Facebook, and one might argue that all would have good uses for the proceeds from selling 10 million shares. The money could fund the expansion of any of their respective business ventures.

Winklevoss brothers attempt to reverse $65m Facebook settlement

Last year The Social Network was probably one of the best films I have seen and it told the story of the founders of Facebook and how three Harvard graduates Tyler/Cameron Winklevoss and Divya Narendra were suing Mark Zuckerburg for stealing what they believe was their concept.

In the end the above parties were silenced after Zuckerburg settled on a lump sum of money involving $20m in cash and $45m in stock based on a valuation of $36 a share.

You would think that this was enough money, but no, millions of dollars is just not enough for the trio as they are looking to re-open the case. They feel at the time of the settlement the stock price was mis-represented, thus robbing them of millions.

Today the parties involved will ask the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco to undo the settlement above, this they hope will allow them to re-open the case in an attempt to get more money and gain an admission from Zuckerberg that he stole their idea.

It’s a big gamble, but if the trio win they could make a shed load of money, but if they lose they would likely forfeit the $65m which they secured in the original settlement.

Personally I feel this is more to do with principle, rather than money, after all why risk $65m otherwise?

Facebook 2011

Excuse me for raining on the Facebook parade, but yesterday's news about the $450 million investment by Goldman Sachs (GS) and $50 million from Russia's Digital Sky Technology didn't move me the way it seemed to move others. This despite the suggested $50 billion valuation, as big and beautiful a number as the stock market has seen in some time. I am certainly not moved in the same way it appears to have moved Goldman's own clients: the Wall Street firm has pledged to line up another $1.5 billion in sales to its high net worth investors, who are said to be champing at the bit to get a piece of the action, which starts with a $2 million minimum. Not that I have $2 million lying around, but I wouldn't buy this stock if I did.

Reason #1: Someone who knows a lot more than I do is selling. While the identities of the specific sellers remain unknown, the current consensus seems to be that most will be from venture capital investors like Accel Partners, Peter Thiel, and Greylock Partners. Maybe Mark Zuckerberg will kick in $50 million or so himself, just for some fooling around money.

But it's not a dilutive primary offering from the company. "Facebook needs no cash!" say its cheerleaders. Okay, fine. Let's just say for argument's sake that it is early stage investors who are selling. Why would they sell? Because they're in need of cash to invest somewhere else? The way the social network is talked about these days, it's the best investment opportunity in town. So why would anyone want to forsake it? And don't give me that crap about VCs being "early stage" and wanting to cash out of a "mature" investment. These people are as money hungry as any other institutional investor, and would let it ride unless….they saw something that suggested that the era of stupendous growth was over.

Facebook reached 500 million users in July. There's been no update since, even though the company had meticulously documented every new 50 million users to that point. Might the curve have crested? And let's not even talk about the fact that they don't really make much money per user — a few dollars a year at most. (Its estimated $2 billion in 2010 revenues would amount to $4 per user at that base.) I certainly haven't spent any money on the site, despite being a fairly regular visitor. And any advertiser who is trying to target me on the social network is wasting their money. But that's just me.

Reason #2: Goldman Sachs. I've got nothing against Goldman Sachs. Hell, I worked there. But when Reuters' Felix Salmon says that the Goldman investment "ratifies" a $50 billion valuation, he's only half right. That is, someone, somewhere—perhaps the Russians at DST Global—might just believe this imaginary number. (It's hard to see why, though: DST got in at a $10 billion valuation in May 2009. Facebook's user base has more than doubled since then. So its valuation should…quintuple?) But concluding that Goldman Sachs believes in a $50 billion valuation is poor reasoning. As Salmon does point out, Goldman has likely earned the lead book runner slot in any initial public offering.

Consider a 20% sale of the company in such an event – or $10 billion at today's "valuation" – and a 2% underwriting fee of $200 million. Goldman would have to share such spoils, so let's call it $100 million into their pocket. Subtracting that underwriting fee from the Goldman investment, and you could easily make the case that for a net purchase price of $350 million, Goldman's ante only values Facebook at $39 billion. Hey, that's just off by $11 billion, so don't worry about it. Buy your shares where you can get them. In other words, go open a $10 million minimum private client account at Goldman Sachs. (Who says Goldman didn't learn its lesson about shafting its own customers? This time around, they've managed to get the customers to line up the shaft themselves.)

Reason #3: Zynga. For all the success of the largely-Facebook-hosted games of Farmville and Cityville, it's hard not to wonder what the success of the anachronistic game maker Zynga really means. Do people really miss their Atari that much? I doubt there's any crossover between the people playing Farmville and those playing the technologically advanced Call of Duty: Black Ops. Which is fine – to each his own. But all the Zynga games make me think about is Wal-Mart (WMT). Which is also fine – there's nothing wrong with being compared to one of the world's most successful companies. But here's the disconnect: if Facebook's future success depends on aiming for the lowest common denominator with the most people possible, that implies pretty slim margins a la Wal-Mart. You think they're going to justify a $50 billion market capitalization through banner ads? Are you kidding me?

Reason #4: The niggling details. Important question: Just what are Facebook's numbers? Important answer: Who the hell knows? In November, Zuckerberg told the world not to hold its breath for an IPO. No worries, Mark, because I'm not. Google (GOOG), if you recall, was pretty open by the end of its life as a private company – everybody knew what it was doing and how it was doing it. Facebook (and, in the same sense, Twitter) reminds me of Kozmo.com during the dot-com boom. Kozmo, you will recall, somehow had people convinced that they were going to make tons of money doing something remarkably pedestrian – that is, delivering Ben & Jerry's by bicycle to Manhattanites. (I remember sitting in the offices of Flatiron Partners way back when. Someone ordered some ice cream on the Web, and – voila! – half an hour later some delivery guy shows up. Kind of like what would happen if you called the deli on the phone. The future was ours to see!) Facebook reportedly pulled in $2 billion in revenues in 2010. I don't know about you, but I'm disinclined to pay 25 times revenues for anything, let alone a company the finances of which I know pretty much nothing about.Tautan

Reason #5: Warren Buffett. The legendary investor cautions those looking at outsize valuations to consider one's purchase of company stock in a different way than price of an individual share, whatever it may be. He suggests one look at the total market valuation – in this case, a sketchy $50 billion – and to consider: Would you buy the whole company for that price, if you had the money? The market value of Goldman Sachs is just $88 billion. I'd take more than half that company over the whole of Facebook any day of the week. I bet Warren Buffett would too.

Facebook CTO: We’re Focused on Mobile in 2011

Facebook CTO Bret Taylor says that the company will be focusing on mobile in 2011, specifically when it comes to delivering a consistent user experience across mobile platforms.

At the Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco today, Taylor revealed to Inside Network‘s Justin Smith that Facebook will be re-implementing many of its mobile websites and applications so they feel the same, no matter how they’re accessed.

At the moment, Facebook has a ton of different mobile platforms. Not only does it have applications for iPhone, Blackberry and Android, but it also has m.facebook.com (its feature phone site), touch.facebook.com (its touch-based site) and 0.Facebook.com, a lightweight website with no data fees, designed for countries where wireless access is expensive.

With so many different mobile platforms, it’s easy to see why Facebook users can feel overwhelmed when trying to access the site via mobile. Taylor says one of Facebook’s goals in 2011 is to standardize the look and feel of all of these applications and mobile websites. HTML5 will play a critical role in creating a consistent user experience, he said.

Taylor also discussed the health of Facebook Places, its geolocation and geosocial product. “We’re focused on rolling it out to as many people as possible,” Taylor said, adding that Places is, “going really well.” He also said that the company will have some interesting stats to release soon.

At the end of the fireside chat, Facebook’s CTO said that one of the most interesting things to watch this year will be the convergence of mobile and social. “My sense is that mobile devices are inherently social… [mobile devices are] already filled with your contacts and your friends, and they also have access to your location,” he said.

Facebook’s Focus In 2011

Today at the Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco, Inside Network’s Justin Smith sat down for a discussion with Facebook CTO Bret Taylor. The two talked about a wide range of issues including the company’s 2010 (when they cut spam by 95 percent, Taylor said). But there was a particular focus on 2011 and the ecosystem. So what’s next for Facebook’s Platform?

Taylor made it very clear that mobile was the big area of focus for the Platform in 2011. But at a higher level Taylor talked a bit about “streamlining things” with regard to all the different ways Facebook is used.

“When we update something, there are about 7 different versions we have to update,” Taylor said. He rattled off a few: facebook.com, m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, the iPhone version, the Android version, etc. “It’s an incredible challenge,” he said. “And there’s feature-skew,” he continued.

Taylor noted that this same issue is a big problem for their third-party developers and partners as well. So how do they combat it? HTML5.

Taylor noted that while HTML5 has gotten a lot of hype in Silicon Valley, he does really believe that it’s the long-term answer. He said that Facebook is a bit ahead of the curve currently with over 125 million of their users accessing Facebook regularly from HTML5-compatible devices. “But we’re putting more in,” he said. “We’re getting to the point where it’s becoming a more mature platform,” he continued.

He noted that Facebook is going to release a lot of developer tools in the coming year so that third-parties can utilize HTML5 better as well.

When Smith asked if it was fair to say that Facebook would re-write or re-work things to make everything more standardized around technologies like HTML5, Taylor said, “At a high level, that’s the direction we’re going.”

Taylor credited both Apple and Google for doing great work in pushing HTML5 forward with their web browsers both on the desktop on on mobile. “It’s big for everyone in this room,” he said.

He did acknowledge that HTML5 was still a bit quirky when compared to native applications. “But the gap is closing,” Taylor concluded.

If any consensus emerged around the state and health of the Facebook platform, it was that the future of it is clearly on mobile devices.

Facebook chief technology officer Bret Taylor said today that his primary focus in 2011 will be building out the platform’s mobile presence. Top executives from the ‘Big 4′ developers — Zynga, Disney’s Playdom, Electronic Arts’ Playfish and Crowdstar — also said they’re moving their attention to mobile platform this year in a panel earlier today at our Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco.

While Facebook has permeated half of the top websites in the world and fueled the growth of multi-billion dollar gaming companies like Zynga, its platform lags behind in reaching even the very best-selling mobile applications.

Taylor said the company had tremendous engineering challenges in ensuring an even experience across its all of its web and mobile presences. He said every time the company rolls out new features, it has to add them to seven versions of the same product: Facebook.com, m.facebook.com (which is optimized for low-end phones), touch.facebook.com (for higher-end, touch-enabled phones), the iPhone app, the Android app, Blackberry and numerous custom integrations of Facebook on other mobile devices.

“It’s incredibly challenging,” he said. “You end up picking and choosing platforms even though your goal is to reach everyone.”

At the same time, phones are inherently social. They’re single-user devices that come filled with a person’s contacts and friends. Plus, their primary function is as a communications device, he said. On top of that, they have access to location.

So far, Facebook has been gradually building out a set of tools that mobile developers can use to populate their applications with people and their friends. Taylor said Flixster’s integration of single sign-on, a quick way for users to sign-up for apps and import their friends, drove a 300 percent increase in sign-ups.

One way Facebook will be tackling the problem is HTML5, which will make it easier for engineers to quickly iterate and release features to a broad set of users without having to go through an approval process.

“We’re still maybe a little ahead of that curve, but we’re making a huge amount of investment,” he said. “Most people in Silicon Valley view HTML5 as the future.”

At an earlier panel, executives from the very biggest social gaming companies also said they’re starting to invest more in mobile platforms. Crowdstar chief executive Peter Relan said one-third of the company’s production will be focused on mobile.

Playdom co-founder and Wild Needle chief executive Rick Thompson said that if he were a smaller, less capitalized developer today he would opt for mobile first.

“Long-term, I couldn’t be more bullish on Facebook,” he said. “But if you have lower budget and quicker need for success, go mobile.”

Kristian Segerstrale, the chief executive and co-founder of Playfish, said that Facebook’s platform had much to improve on with its capabilities for mobile developers.

“The Facebook mobile experience remains high-friction in terms of actual DAUs,” he said. “I think they have a place. But Facebook, the handset providers and service providers will get better at merging. I think consumers will choose the best social experience — and it would be surprising if it didn’t turn out like social on Facebook.”
